Sexual Dysfunction and Prostate Cancer

The instructor will will cover 4 broad categories: Prostate Anatomy and functioning, symptoms and diagnosis of prostate cancer, post intervention considerations on sexual health and the role of mental health providers in the penile rehabilitation process.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

What You’ll Learn in this Course

Describe the basic anatomy and function of the prostate.

Name the different intervention a person with prostate cancer may be intervene with and how that impacts sexual functioning.

Describe what is meant by "penile rehabilitation" and name at least 2 ways in which mental health providers can help with this process.

Leonardo Candelario Perez, PhD, LP

Sexual Dysfunction and Prostate Cancer

Leonardo Candelario-Perez is a Latinx, gender non-binary identified, bilingual clinical psychologist in Minnesota. They acquired their PhD in 2015 from Albizu University in San Juan, PR. In 2018 Dr. Candelario-Perez completed a two year postdoctoral fellowship, at the now, Institute for Sexual and Gender Health, University of Minnesota Medical School.

Currently Dr. Candelario-Perez works within the Urology/Gynecology departments at Health Partners, providing sexual health consultations and therapy to patients. In addition to this, they are a Co-Educational Consultant for the National Center for Gender Spectrum Health( NCGSP), Adjunct Professor at the UMN and LGBTQI+ Consultant for a Latinx Community based program named Centro Tyrone Guzman (CTG).

In their clinical practice, Dr. Candelario-Perez uses CBT and an intersectional queer feminist lens when working with individuals experiencing psychological distress in relation to issues relating to gender, sexuality and sexual functioning. As an adjunct professor for the UMN certificate in Human Sexuality, Dr. Candelario-Pérez teaches graduate level students on the topic of sexual health concerns and functioning. In their work with the NCGSH, Dr. Candelario-Perez is Co-Educational Consultant and Developer. They're responsible for developing curriculums and trainings informed by NCGSH’s Gender Affirming Life Span Approach (GALA).

Finally, as the LGBTQI+ Diversity consultant and educator for CTG, Dr. Candelario-Pérez collaborates with the center on developing educational programs on LGBTQIA+ matters for youth, parents, community workers and families.
