Sadia Arshad, MPH, MSN, WHNP-BC. Born and raised in Miami, Sadia is a brown Muslim woman with experience as a peer sex educator, women's health nurse practitioner, and reproductive justice advocate. She never planned on being any of those things, but life has its way of bringing experiences to Sadia. Growing up in a home full of domestic violence and neighborhood full of health inequalities, Sadia saw several things related to reproductive and sexual health that were often silenced and shamed. As she grew older, she saw the silence and shame manifest, and she wanted to change that. She didn't really know what to do, so she started reading about sex and what it means to have sex as a Muslim woman, a brown woman, and a brown Muslim woman. This, in turn, led her to work with some cool organizations, like Planned Parenthood, Fenway Health, SaheliBoston (a South Asian interest intimate partner violence organization), Advocates for Youth, the National Minority AIDS Council, HEART Women and Girls, and the Repeal Hyde Art Project. After seeing the non-profit life and witnessing serious mishaps in the healthcare industry, Sadia decided that she wanted to go back to school. She completed her nursing studies at Emory University. Sadia is now a board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner in South Florida. She also earned her Masters in Public Health (dual concentration in Maternal and Child Health and Social and Behavioral Sciences) and Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from Boston University.

Ethics and Ethical Behavior: AASECT Core Knowledge Areas
Brooke Norton, LMFT, MLS specializes in sexuality and relationships, and works with clients of all genders, sexual orientations, and relationship styles. Before earning her Masters of Marriage and Family Therapy degree from UMass Boston, she was a sex educator, and she worked with parents and children in a few area schools, teaching about puberty. She has given workshops for parents about talking with their kids about sex and sexuality.
She is a parent of two teen boys, a breast cancer survivor, and also a survivor of 9/11/01. As a white therapist, she is actively examining her own racist conditioning and the systemic racism in which she was raised and continues to exist inside of. This includes working in the United States mental health field, which has its own racist history.
She has been Questioning her own gender and sexuality her whole life. She feels that her not-knowing stance has been personally helpful to be even more open minded than her professional training has guided her to be. She enjoys researching and learning about identity spectrums and all the varied ways we get to know ourselves and each other. She is not intimidated by confusion and finds that confusion is often powerful and very important. She does not expect to ever settle on a particular identity or orientation, and she is pleased to report that she feels it is possible to understand life as an ongoing process of self.
Thus, not surprisingly, she feels that her best work is with clients who are dealing with confusion and anxiety about their bodies or their relationships. This includes clients who are struggling with sexuality, gender, relationship issues, body image problems, orgasm challenges, sexual pain, trauma, and differences of desire.
She also work with clients who are dealing with illness, heartbreak, grief, aging, depression, anxiety, and sleep/wellness/self-care issues."

This course is an introduction to desirability politics, a framework that argues that whom we desire and do not desire sexually, romantically, and socially is political and informed by systemic oppression, such as racism, ableism, cissexism, and classism. This course will give participants the opportunity and space to examine, reflect on, and share their own experiences with and understandings of desire and desirability. They will also be able to interrogate the common argument “it’s just a personal preference” used to justify people’s sexual and romantic desires for particular bodies over others as well as discuss the impacts digital technology has on sex, dating, and intimacy.
